Ebenezer Obey is from the ‘Egba-Yoruba’ Tribal background of Ogun State, Nigeria and his original name is ‘Ebenezer Remilekun Aremu Olasupo Fabiyi’. After moving to Lagos in the mid of 1950s he started his musical career and played with various bands.
After his work with the band ‘Fatai Rolling-Dollar’ as an instructor, he formed his own band ‘The International Brothers’ in 1964. The band came out playing highlife-juju fusion, a style of Nigerian popular music. In the early 1970s, the band transformed themselves into ‘Inter-Reformers’ and released a list of ‘Juju’ album hits on the West African Decca musical label.
Ebenezer Obey started experimenting with ‘Yoruba Percussion’ style and modernizing the band by adding Western-style guitars, drum-kits, funkiness of Yoruban drumming and talking drums, a West African drum. The merging of complex Yoruba proverbs into dance-floor composition was his musical strength. The Inter-Reformers band performed in Nigerian Yoruba social-circle music and did extremely well in praise singing for rich Nigerian Socialites and business tycoons. Ebenezer is also well known for Christian spiritual themes in his music. In the early 1990s he got retired from Nigerian music department.
