Painting a guitar depends on the type of guitar you have. If its an acoustic one, using a spray paint might not be the best choice. Here are few tips on how to paint your electric guitar. There are many ways to bring that gloss and touch on your repainting. However, you have to know the mechanics, electronics and parts of your guitar well if you are going to try it out yourself. If not, its better you give it to a professional.

 Step 1:

Remove the strings; detach the fret board from the body. The fret board can be detached by removing the screws in back of the body. The bridge and the scratch plate has to be removed. The pickups and the volume knobs have to be carefully removed and placed aside. You might require a soldering machine too.

Step 2:

After the body is separated, the next step is to remove the existing gloss finish from the guitar. The body has to be sanded so that the smooth surface becomes a bit ruff. This helps the primer glue to the body of the guitar.

Step 3:

Hang the guitar body on a wire. The wire can be hooked to the guitar belt hole. Using a spray gun, start painting your guitar. The guitar will not give that glossy look with one coat. It would require atleast three to four coats. So dry the guitar every time you paint and do the next coating when the first one dries up.

Step 4:

Once you are done with the final coat, leave it to dry for at least a day. If you are applying a decal to the guitar, you have to apply before the paint dries up.

Step5:

The final step would be clear coating. This brings the gloss to the guitar and also protects the paint from wear and tire. After the clear coat, apply the final coat of lacquer and keep it in a place free of dust for the next two days. The process of drying would take more days if the weather is cloudy or rainy. Using the guitar before the paint completely dries up might destroy the entire finish and the whole process would have to be repeated again.

Step6:

You have now painted your guitar. Now, carefully attach the head to the body. This should be followed by the bridge. The pickups are attached to the scratch plate or body depending on your guitar design and screwed to the body of the guitar. Tune in the strings and you are now ready with your brand new repainted guitar.

Happy Guitaring!
